Something different, something time-honored: You’re invited to join in the unique experience as we close Grand Hotel’s doors for the winter months.
This package includes a casual dinner buffet on Sunday evening and a continental breakfast Monday morning. Enjoy an informal atmosphere as we clean out our pantries and wine cellar. Bob Tagatz, Resident Historian, will host a presentation explaining the process we go through to close the hotel, as well as fun facts and interesting information from the 2023 season. Monday morning we continue the tradition of ringing the bell to signify the end of our season, bringing in the rockers, and honor exemplary service with our Grand Legend Celebration. Take home a piece of Grand Hotel with a geranium from the Front Porch.
We look forward to you joining our staff in this annual end-of-the-year event that has become a tradition for so many.

The 2014 Mackinac Island Lilac Festival starts on Friday, June 6, and goes through June 15. Some early lilacs are blooming, but look for the majority to blossom starting next week. In the meantime, here’s a view of some of the early summer flowers adding their color and beauty to June on Mackinac Island.

These are houseplants you can grow almost anywhere, with no need to worry about pets digging in the soil or nibbling the foliage. What a fun gift idea, too! They need just about an inch of water to live - simply replace the water every 1-2 months as needed. If it eventually outgrows the glass vessel, you can plant and grow it like a regular potted plant.

All of the gardens are so inspirational and I have a lot of ideas for next year where I will try to cram what I saw in beautiful yards into containers on my deck 😅
It’s truly been a memorable experience and we hope to come back again soon, not just for the garden show but to enjoy more of the island as well!

Sunrise over a new corner of a garden you might recognize from jackbarnwelldesign videos. I’m always interested to see what Jack does here because this corner is a real challenge. It’s planted along a sea wall where waves will crash over on occasion and in a very exposed area. This is coming right off an area that is protected and heavily planted with annuals so the other challenge is transitioning to a completing different situation in the same garden. 💚 This is it! The final countdown to our Grand Garden Show at the award winning historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan! 💚
Pre-show festivities begin this Saturday evening with a cocktail party in the gardens, followed by a Sunday afternoon cooking demonstration with celebrity chef Nathan Lyon. Sunday evening, we'll welcome all Grand Hotel guest for our opening reception in the gardens followed by a memorable dining experience in the Main Dining Room.
Monday and Tuesday, you'll enjoy a mix of inspirational garden tours and speaker sessions. In the mornings, you'll hear from Laura of gardenanswer, Jenny of creeksidenursery, Paul Zammit and other dynamic speakers. The afternoons will be filled with garden tours at some of the most magnificent homes on Mackinac Island, all designed and tended by Jack Barnwell and his skilled team at jackbarnwelldesign. You'll leave incredibly inspired and motivated to garden!
Mackinac Island is one of the most unique, enchanting vacation spots in America. You'll step back in time when you step off the ferry that delivers you to this magical place. No motor vehicles fill the streets of Mackinac. Instead, you'll hop on a bike or up onto a carriage drawn by fine horses and make your way up the hill to the Grand Hotel for the Grand Garden Show. From the porch, you'll glimpse the magnificent Mackinac Bridge--the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world--which crosses the sparkling Straits of Mackinac. All the cares in the world seem to evaporate when you are in this enchanting place.

there is nothing more nostalgic to me than heading up to mackinac island. this tiny island between michigan’s upper and lower peninsula is nothing but charm...mostly because it hasn’t been updated since 1985 and no motor vehicles are allowed on the island. yup! you can only get around by horse and buggies or by bike! i mean you could also walk but ehhh 😂 and no trip up to the island would be complete without grabbing as much of their world famous fudge as i can carry! what were some of your favorite vacation spots as a kid?

Just got back from the island celebrating 8 years of marriage! We had a great time — full of non-stop wandering 🤍 I can’t wait to share all our adventures!! Starting with this one….
We, of course, always make a point of biking around the island (8.2 miles)… but this year we made a mistake 😂 it was drizzling and cold… about 62 degrees… and so, so windy… but we thought we’d be just fine biking! LOL So we grabbed a cup of coffee from our FAV (luckybean.mi) and headed off on our adventure! 🚲
About halfway around the island we were NOT okay 😂 and we were too far along to go back, so we kept pressing forward. Safe to say…. We had some STUNNING, unreal views of the beautifully foggy island…. Buuuut we’ll never bike the island against high winds and in the freezing cold rain again 🥶😂 lesson learned 😅
